About this object

History of use

This is a post-contact technique that was not widely adopted and baskets of this type are uncommon. However Andrea Laforet noted that Sapir collected a berry basket made using this technique from Port Alberni.

Narrative

There is a metal and paper tag associated with the basket that says: A-63-5 Annie Nelson Cedarbark coil basket. The donors gave this collection "in memory of all the beautiful weavers who have taken a bit of this or a bit of that and created something for all to behold."

Physical description

Cedar bark basket in a cylindrical shape. The wall is formed by open stitched coiling. The bottom of the basket is also formed by open stitched coiling but the coils become successively smaller. Each coil is fully wrapped in cedar bark.
