About this object
Narrative
Made for the donor in 1967-68 in Afghanistan. Ordered for him, by a Tajik friend, from a village north of Kunduz, called Imamsahib.
Physical description
Natural coloured cotton cape. The front opening, hem and cuffs are decorated with black machine made geometric designs and feather-like plant motifs. They are also edged in a deep purple-red plaiting. Two black vertical lines are stitched on either side of a seam, with colourful repeating diamond stitching over a portion of the seam near the top in yellow, bright pink, dark purple, light grey-green and burgundy silk thread. Small deep purple-red pompoms line the neckline, and there is one at each cuff seam and side slit. Small multicoloured tassels with small white beads hang from the front opening, three on each side. The neck, cuffs, front opening and bottom edge are lined with a burgundy fabric. On the back, below the neck, is an embroidered rectangular area, coloured dark reddish-pink and blue.
