niijaang.uu (Male Mask)

Masks were, and continue to be, used in potlatches and to represent family prerogatives and ancestors. The strong and simple forms of the design are essential elements in masks meant to be danced by firelight.

Carved wooden male mask with human hair and a piece of cedar bark on top of head. Mask has green-blue coloured tattoos, one on the left cheek and the other beside the right eye. Has red coloured tattoo on right cheek. Lips of mouth and end of nose are red, eyebrows and goatee are black, holes in eyes.
