History of use

Haida hats with a series of basketry 'potlatch' rings at the top indicating the status of its owner. Although the number of rings is often equated with the number of potlatches given by the hat's owner; this may not be strictly followed (Holm).

Physical description

Four-sgil basketry hat with a flared brim. There are four stacked cylinders (sgil) above the crown. Twill twined raised diamond pattern on the rim and part of brim, otherwise plain twined weave. Horizontal twill twined row at centre of diamonds and at edges for crown and rings. Outer surface is unpainted.
