Narrative

Original record said: "This pole is a fine example of the distinctive style of Tom Price." Later research by Bill Holm and Robin Wright suggest it is the work of the "Chicago Settee" artist, Zacherias Nicolas.

Physical description

A model miniature totem pole depicting a goat, a raven, and a human head with a four-ringed hat (from bottom to top). The goat has black ovoid eyes surrounded by a plain carved tapering oval and a blue-green area with black brows above, red nostrils, blue-green horns, and an open red mouth showing twenty-six plain teeth. There is a black and blue-green ovoid in ovoid below at either side. The raven has circular black eyes surrounded by a plain carved tapering oval and a blue-green area with black brows above, a black beak, and a red lined mouth. Above, there is a three digit red claw that has a black circle in a blue-green ovoid centre at either side with a red split u within a black u form at either outer side, and a black and blue-green ovoid on top at either side. The human head has circular black eyes surrounded by a plain carved tapering oval with black brows above, a nose, an open red mouth showing twenty plain teeth, and a pair of elongated blue-green u forms above the mouth on the left side while there is a pair of red inverted u forms above the mouth on the right side. The four-ringed hat has an alternating red and blue-green pattern. Two screw eyes at the back to which white cord is attached. Has a concave back.
