About this object

Narrative

The donor said this rattle was originally collected by Col. James Peters, RCN, who came to Victoria as a Major in the Navy in 1887. Peters lived for many years in Esquimault. According to family history, Peters also traveled to the Queen Charlotte Islands in the 1880s? Formerly listed as Haida; currently thought to be of Tsimshian origin.

Physical description

Rattle comprised of two complementary parts. One side has bird's head with recurved beak and tongue that is sticking out. Other side has carved whale design in slight relief. Finely carved on both sides, painted in colours of black and red.
