About this object

Narrative

This rug is part of a larger collection of objects honouring Maggie Pointe, sister of Shane Pointe and Gina Grant. On February 1, 2003, it was used for a memorial potlatch at Musqueam to honour the life of Maggie Pointe and was then given away, as is the custom, to the UBC Museum of Anthropology. On March 18, 2003 it was featured in the exhibit "To Wash Away the Tears," a collaboration between Shane, Gina, MOA and the students of the Critical Curatorial Studies MA program.

Physical description

Red Persian-style rug with geometric designs. Three bands of decoration enclose the central design. The outermost band has two black lines with three rows of light brown diamonds on red ground. The second band has multicoloured leaves and diamonds on a dark blue ground. The third band has the same pattern as the first, with green-blue diamonds. All three bands are wider on the long sides of the rug. The centre has three main sections. There is a dark blue heart shape around a geometric flower at each end. The middle section has arrows, flowers and a geometric blossom outlined in white. One end of the rug has a white fringe; the other end has a band of woven white-brown cotton.
