About this object

Iconographic meaning

The hare is a symbol of longevity.

Specific techniques

Soft lead silicate enamels are applied in a second firing to a vessel which has previously been fired in the biscuit, that is without glaze, to a high temperature. The colours may be separated by small carefully applied lines of slip, a thin clay, or as in this case, by incised lines.

Physical description

A flattened sphere divided horizontally with the equal parts forming the container (part a) and the lid (part b). The bottom has a recessed flange to fit within the lid. The container has a light brown body, burnt red-brown in firing with a grey-brown interior. The container is thickly potted with an overall appearance of matte translucent colours. The bottom has a shallow incised pattern of double vertical lines enclosing inverted lappets at top, with all lead enamelled in thin bright yellow-green which splashes over low foot rim. The top has a shallow incised diamond pattern, yellow-green, on which is superimposed four equally spaced bright yellow cloud motifs. The central medallion pattern suggests landscape, with a superimposed hare, and all lead enamelled in light purple-grey-brown. Paper label reads: "10 lj 6."
