South African printmaker, author and textile designer. Born in Mahlabatini, Zululand, studied at the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC) Art and Craft Centre and Rorke's Drift Art and Craft Centre. He studied in Sweden from 1965 to 1967 on a scholarship, returning to South Africa in 1968, teaching for a brief period at Rorke’s Drift. In 1970 he moved back to Sweden. In 1993, he enrolled at the University of Lund, to complete a doctorate of philosophy in African historical symbolism. He returned to South Africa between 1992 and 1995 to conduct field research for his dissertation. In 1998, the Durban Art Gallery held an ‘Azaria Mbatha Retrospective Exhibition’.
