B.C. Totem Pole Preservation Committee

Biography

The “British Columbia Totem Pole Preservation Committee” was formally set up in 1953, with representative members from the UBC Dept. of Anthropology, the BC Provincial Museum, and the BC Government. Their aim was to survey existing poles of the province, and to acquire and preserve all those not in use. Over the years, this committee was supported by (in addition to funds from UBC and the BCPM): H.R. MacMillan, W.C. Koerner, Alaska Pine & Cellulose Ltd., Powell River Lumber Co., BC Forest Products, BC Packers, the Flavelle Lumber Co., and the Union Steamship Co. They supplied money and/or logs, and/or shipping.
