Biography

Luke Iksiktaaryuk, printmaker and sculptor, was born in the Kazan River area in 1909. A well-known shaman, his figures, mostly in antler, appear lonely and trance-like, sometimes in ritualistic groupings, sometimes part bird or walrus. His participation in the Winnipeg exhibition of 1964 marked the first appearance of Baker Lake art in the South. His work was also included in the first major exhibition of Baker Lake artists at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1976.
