Sto:lo (Ohamil)

Biography

Mrs. Jim was a celebrated basket maker and weaver. She spent her entire life at Ohamil and spoke only her native language, Halkomelem. Sto:lo ethnographer Oliver Wells worked with Mrs. Jim on many occasions and she is featured in several of his books on weaving, as well as the recent publication edited by Keith Thor Carlson "You Are Asked to Witness: The Sto:lo in Canada's Pacific Coast History". At the 1964 Canadian Handicrafts exhibit in Montreal she was recognized for her woven tumplines. The BC vital index shows a death certificate for a woman from the Ohamil reserve named Margarite Jim (1873-1967) whose husband's name was August Jim--likely the same woman.
