Biography

Matsuoka Eikyū (松岡映丘; July 9, 1881–March 2, 1938) was a Japanese artist born in Hyogo Prefecture. His real name was Teruo (輝夫). He was the youngest of five brothers (and the other three died young), who were all recognized in their field (medicine, literature, poetry, ethnology, linguistic). He grew up in Ibaraki Prefecture, and first studied art with Hashimoto Gahō (橋本雅邦) of the Kanō school. He got interested in drawing armors and became a pupil of Yamana Tsurayoshi (山名貫義) of the Sumiyoshi school where he learnt yamato-e paintings. I also studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts under Kawabata Gyokushō (川端玉章) and Terasaki Kōgyō (寺崎広業) in 1899–1904. He taught at the Kanagawa Women’s Normal School and later at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.
