Scow, John, Chief

Kwikwasut'inuxw (Gwa'yasdam's)

John Scow's first wife was a 'Namgis woman, who brought as a dowry privilege a sea monster housefrontal painting. Later, a totem pole featuring Scow's principle crests, carved by Mungo Martin, was added to the front of the house. About 1915 Scow, by then a widower, married a noble Heiltsuk woman. The house was reconstructed and her dowry included the Raven image painted on the new structure. At this time the frontal pole was retained but moved off to the side, at the front of the house.
