Biography

Yōshū Chikanobu (楊洲周延) (1838–1912), later known as Toyohara Chikanobu (豊原周延) was a prolific ukiyo-e artist from Japan. His real name was Hashimoto Naoyoshi (橋本直義). His gō/gagō (号/雅号) or artist names include Yōshū (楊洲), Yōshūsai (楊洲斎) and Ikkakusai (一鶴斎). He lived through the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period (1868 –1912). After studying with the Kano school, he studied under Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Utagawa Kunisada/Utagawa Toyokuni III and Toyohara Kunichika. After the Tokugawa Shogunate collapsed, he fought in the Battle of Hakodate (1868 –1869) as a Tokugawa loyalist. He produced prints of a diverse range of topics including war prints and bijin-ga (beauty pictures).
