kitab (Amulet)

Charms or amulets are worn according to the ailment suffered or to ward off evil spirits, especially those causing illness. The pouches contain inscriptions written for the individual, called ketab. The wearing of amulets has been practiced in Ethiopia and surrounding regions for millennia. It remains popular in the highlands.
