About this object

History of use

Basketry filled a vital need as containers for storage domestic use and transportation of goods. Some had multiple uses; others were made for specific functions. After European contact, used for trade and sale items. Forms have been altered to meet European tastes. Basketry making was and is a women's art.

Specific techniques

Base is 2 ply plain twining with z-twist. Walls and rim are 2 strand twill twining (diagonal twining) with z-twist. Rim joins walls with 3 ply z-twining. Base joins walls with very fine 3 ply s twining. Edge of rim is finished with 3 ply plain twining, s-twist.

Physical description

Basket with an oval shape as viewed from the top, tightly woven, walls flaring from base, rim extending inward from top of wall. Zigzag pattern woven in green and light brown dyed strands. One pink-brown strand used in weaving the base to the sides. Viewed inside, basket shows six rows at the base of wall woven with dark blue substituted for green. Viewing underside of rim shows it to be woven in green and dark blue. Base has warps radiating from two points. Rim reinforced with warps cut off.
